Practical Rifle Port St Joe

The Practical Rifle Port St Joe events are a subset of the Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club activities with the following goals:

- Allow the user to develop the skills of the practical application of the rifle, with the sidearm in a supporting role, by practicing for and competing in "practical-" or "defensive-" style rifle and sidearm firing events, utilizing multiple targets in a dynamic setting with multiple positions and locations, and with movement.

- Promote the safe, responsible, and proficient operation of the rifle and sidearm.

- Promote the positive image of private firearms ownership.

These events are intended for responsible shooters with a solid understanding of firearms safety and the fundamentals of marksmanship.

Events will be held as our schedules allow, but look for us on Wednesday evenings and on the second and / or fifth Saturday of the month, when there is one.  Check back here to see when we will hold events and for special instructions.  Events will occur during daylight and during hours of darkness.  Check back for possible cancellations during inclement weather (the events will still be held if the weather is not prohibitive).  See also the Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club events calendar.  Event entry fee will either be $15 or $10, depending on the course of fire.  You do not need to be a Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club member to participate in these events, but we encourage you to join in order to practice on non-event days.

The Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club is a well-equipped facility to enjoy and practice your favorite shooting sports every day, and is easily accessible from Hwy 98.  We invite you to learn more about their facilities and the benefits of membership of the club at https://gulfrifleclub.com/ and also here on our website.

Shooters interested in the Practical Rifle events are encouraged to also participate in the Glock Pistol Matches and the Steel Challenge pistol matches at GRPC.  Both are open to any appropriate sidearm, including revolvers and .22 categories--not just Glocks.

Feel free to contact us if you have any question about our events.

Visit us at the Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club, on Hwy 71 just north of Port St Joe, FL.

COMPLIMENTARY NRA MEMBERSHIPS:

The National Rifle Association is currently offering complimentary memberships to members of the military, law enforcement and first responders.

Please go to https://signup.nralifeofduty.tv/ for more information and to take advantage of this offer.

The Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club is an NRA-affiliated club.  While you don't need to be a GRPC or NRA member to participate in the Practical Rifle (or Glock or Steel Challenge matches), NRA membership is required for GRPC membership.  PRPSJ encourages you to join and support an organization fighting for your continued firearms rights.  These organizations include, but are not limited to the NRA, the Second Amendment Foundation, and Gun Owners of America.  Contact us for additional recommendations for the organization(s) that best suit your needs.

THANKS TO THOSE WHO ARE VOTING ON THE POLL AT THE SIDE!

This website doesn't have a visitor count, so it's the only way we know people are looking. We don't expect that the website is perfect, but it's good that you're finding what you need. Originally it was part of the generic web design (and we almost deleted it), but it's nice to see the numbers go up every once in a while. We'll still keep updating the website, though.

Ladies' Night:  Intro to Sidearms.  (INITIAL CONCEPT ESTIMATE as of 18 Feb - Subject to change)

By request, but open to all.  This clinic is intended for beginners with little to no prior experience and will provide participants with a solid foundation regarding pistol / revolver safety, terminology, function, and operation.  The sequence of events is still under development.

Required equipment:  eye protection, ear protection, and suitable clothing (to include closed-toe footwear, and a hat with a brim or bill...hot brass will be ejected from pistols, possibly toward personnel).  Insect repellant, etc may be desired.

Participants should bring a .22 lr pistol or revolver with at least 15 rds of ammunition, and a .38 revolver or 9mm / .380 pistol with at least 10 rds of ammunition.

If you are unable to bring either or both of these, contact us as a limited number can be provided (with reimbursement for ammo).  Alternate calibers will be acceptable as substitutes for the .38 / 9mm, but you will have to shoot what you bring - larger caliber sidearms are not recommended for this clinic.  The estimated duration of this clinic will be 60 - 90 minutes with free time available afterwards.  Limited artificial lighting will be provided.

Although the other PRPSJ events will run during mildly inclement weather, this was a beginner course and the forecast was a bit severe for this event.  WE REGRET ANY CONFUSION OR INCONVENIENCE.  This event is being posponed to a later date still to be coordinated.  If you wish to be part of this, simply contact us.

Wed 19 Feb, 1800 Central / 1900 Eastern

A Practical Rifle / Two-Gun event takes place Wednesday evening 19 Feb. The range will be closed for all other pistol and rifle shooting for the duration of the event. Set up and sign in will start at 7:00 PM Eastern. Expect multiple targets at distances between 10 yards and 75 yards, with a possible bonus event at longer distance(s).

Equipment: These events are designed for service rifles or carbines (i.e. 5.56, 7.62, etc) with iron sights minimum and red dot or low power scopes recommended. However, this particular event will also be appropriate for your SBR / SMG / Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) / 22lr rifle, if you desire.  For your sidearm, bring something like DA revolvers = or >.38, 1911 pistols, Glocks, "WonderNines", etc--see the guidelines on our webpage. Within these guidelines, your are welcome to use your CCW sidearm.

Bring at least 3x working rifle magazines and at least 3-4x working sidearm magazines/speedloaders. You will need mag pouches, slings, and holsters suitable for use during movement--see the guidelines on our webpage. The estimated number of required rounds is 75x rifle, 50x sidearm.  You are encouraged to bring more ammo/mags if you can, especially if you want more practice after the event. Some targets may be steel--no Armor Piercing (AP) or steel core ammo is allowed on the steel target stages (shooters will know before and will be able to manage their ammo).

Limited artificial lighting will be provided. You will need a suitable hand-held and/or Weapon-Mounted Lights. A reflective belt or vest, body-mounted Cyalume glow-stick (tied to your belt is acceptable), or body-mounted personal light is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for your safety. Impact resistant eye protection and hearing protection is mandatory during the match.

There will be extensive movement and some use of alternate positions (i.e. kneeling, prone/modified prone, etc) during this event. Participants will not be expected to perform any activities beyond their skill levels or physical limitations. One of our goals is zero injuries.

Timeline:
- 1800 Central / 1900 Eastern: Event set-up
- 1845 C / 1945 E: Safety briefing, procedural briefing and walk-through
- 1900 C / 2000 E: Start time
- 2100 C / 2200 E: Cease-fire, tear down, clean up
- 2130 C / 2230 E: End time, departure
Please understand that the length of the event is estimated, and may be subject to factors beyond our control. The course of fire may be adjusted to accommodate the number of participants.

Cost: Entry fee is $10 per shooter.

This event will be SBR / SMG / PCC / .22-friendly, but you may have to "stretch it" for a few shots.  We can support a limited number of firers who wish to exercise a supplemental SGN option - bring as many rds of birdshot, buckshot, or slugs as you want to fire.

Note: We'll need at least one participant with a pickup truck.

Sat 08 Feb, 0800 Cent / 0900 East

Practical Rifle: Emphasis on rifle fire beyond 100 yards. Probable course of fire includes shooting from sitting/kneeling, prone unsupported, and/or prone supported (bipod, etc). Perhaps 50 rds rifle needed. You may want more rounds for sighters or additional events if time allows. Prob need 2 good mags, but prob won't need carrying pouches, as this will be a somewhat beginner-friendly event. Accuracy standard will be silhouette tgts at up to 300 yds. Some possible movement.  Note:  We'll need at least one participant with a pickup truck.

Wed 08 Jan 2014.  (Left in place 22 Jan 14 as a guide for future events.  See also GETTING STARTED page.)

Practical Rifle, with supporting sidearm.  SGN-optional in addition to sidearm, not as a substitute for either sidearm or rifle.

Expect emphasis on movement (participants will not be expected to perform any activities beyond their skill levels or physical limitations).  Standard rifles/sidearms and loadouts (mags, slings, holsters, mag pouches, lights).  Expect also close-quarters sidearm emphasis--participants are encouraged to review one-handed speed-rocks and the use of the support hand in a striking or blocking mode.  Participants are encouraged to bring (and use) their CCW for this event.  The course of fire is still under development, but round-counts for recent events have been running at about 75x rifle, 25x sidearm, with approx 3-4x rifle mags and 2-3x sidearm mags required.  A personal illumination device or reflective clothing is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for your safety.  Impact-resistant eye protection and hearing protection will be mandatory.

This event will be SBR-friendly.  It will be mostly SMG / PCC / .22-friendly, but you'll have to "stretch it" for a few shots.
Events will now be SGN-optional as much as possible (if a new idea works).  This will apply to sidearm-specific courses of fire, but not for transition-to-sidearm evolutions.  For this event, do still bring your sidearm/CCW, but you may bring an SGN as a second option.  Bring at least 10x 00 Buck for this event if you choose the SGN option.  We may have an SGN-specific event soon-see below.

Note:  Loaner Rifles Available

As of 07 Sep 13, a limited number of ARs may be available by prior coordination as loaners to allow you to participate or try new equipment. E-mail us to be placed in contact with the person making this offer--do not just show up assuming it will be there. You will be required to provide factory ammunition to take advantage of this offer.

Note:  Ammo Available

As of 18 Sep, a limited amount of ammunition (in common calibers such as 5.56, 7.62, 9, .45, etc) may be available for purchase by arrangement. Contact Jeff at Elite Rifles at 855-WAR TOOL or info@eliterifles.com

FUTURE EVENTS:

Participants are encouraged to prepare for events with an emphasis on precision fire. We will probably have one event with a lesser standard of precision required first (no special equipment needed). Later, we are planning for an event with a higher standard of precision required (appropriate for scoped-rifles, similar to NRA F-class rifles, DMRs, SPRs, etc). Expect these events as we get toward March and May. As a basis of comparison, expect to need to place shots at least within 3 inches of Point of Aim (6-inch groups or 3 MOA) at 200 yards and within 6 inches of POA (12-inch groups or 4 MOA) at 300 yards with some emphasis on speed for the first event. The second event would push participants to or beyond Minute of Angle accuracy (1-inch or less at 100 yds, 3-inches or less at 300 yds) with less emphasis on speed. Continue to check our websites for more information as it becomes available.

POSSIBLE FUTURE EVENT:  Intro to "Long(er)" Range Shooting:

This event would be intended for rifle shooters who want to learn how to "stretch their legs" beyond 100 yards. It would be appropriate for beginners as well as experienced shooters who haven't had enough opportunity to fire beyond 100 yds. Any type of centerfire rifle, with or without a scope, would be acceptable. This event is intended to be educational, interesting, challenging, and fun, without being too technical or difficult. This clinic would probably take place on a Saturday morning. Successfully completing this course is intended to be a stepping stone to participating in the Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club's High Power events and/or Practical Rifle events. Participants should be able to hit targets at both 200 and 300 yards upon completion, as well as be able to theoretically hit targets at greater distances. Continue to check our websites for more information as it becomes available and contact me at PracticalRiflePortStJoe@mail.com if you are interested. Your rifle can do it--can you?

(Please understand this event is still under proposal and initial consideration. The purpose of this announcement is to see how many people are interested.)

POSSIBLE FUTURE EVENT:  Beginner's Clinic:

To date, most of the attendees have been fairly advanced shooters.  As soon as there is enough interest, we will be happy to have a beginner-friendly clinic and/or event.  If this interests you, simply e-mail us.

FUTURE EVENTS-Shotgun (SGN):

Participants are encouraged to prepare for a course of fire that will allow you to work with your defensive shotguns. The course of fire is under development. Expect that you will need shell carriers of some sort. Ammo requirements will include birdshot (7 1/2 or smaller, i.e. 8 or 9), buckshot (00), and limited amount of slugs. The timeline for this course of fire is still under development, but it won't occur before February. Continue to check our websites for more information as it becomes available.

- NOTE: Thanks to those who are voting on the poll at the side! This website doesn't have a visitor count, so it's the only way I know people are looking. We don't expect that the website is perfect, but it's good that you're finding what you need. Originally it was part of the generic web design (and we almost deleted it), but it's nice to see the numbers go up every once in a while. We'll still keep updating the website, though.

PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS

- Wed 20 Nov (pre-event announcement):

A Practical Rifle / Two-Gun event takes place Wednesday evening 20 Nov. The range will be closed for all other pistol and rifle shooting for the duration of the event. Set up and sign in will start at 7:00 PM Eastern. Expect multiple targets at distances between 10 yards and 100 yards, with a possible bonus event at longer distance(s).

This event will also be appropriate for your .22lr AR upper, if you desire and it functions properly. However, the bonus event may not be appropriate for your .22 AR. One of the events may be appropriate for your SGN, but you might be at a disadvantage. For your sidearm, bring something like DA revolvers = or >.38, 1911 pistols, Glocks, "WonderNines", etc--see the guidelines on our webpage. Within these guidelines, your are welcome to use your CCW sidearm.

Bring at least 4x working rifle magazines and at least 2x working sidearm magazines/speedloaders. You will need mag pouches, slings, and holsters suitable for use during movement--see the guidelines on our webpage. The estimated number of required rounds is 100x rifle, 25x sidearm (the courses of fire are still under development). You are encouraged to bring more ammo/mags if you can. Some but not all targets may be steel--no Armor Piercing (AP) or steel core ammo is allowed on the steel target stages (shooters will know beforehand and will be able to manage their ammo).

WED 18 SEP (updated 11 Sep)

Clinic / Workshop night.  The courses of fire are mostly finished:  there will be a greater emphasis on sidearms for this event.  We will work on fundamental skills, such as reloading, firing around cover/concealment, and transitions from rifle to sidearm.  Emphasis will be on manipulation skills, rather than target distance.

"YOUR MISSION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT": Expect multiple engagements in close quarters distances.

Estimate of required rounds is:  100x or more rifle, 100x or more sidearm (absolute minimum 75x ea).  The number of magazines required for this is still estimated at a minimum of 3x rifle mags and 3x sidearm mags/speedloaders (bring 4x each or more if you can).  Don't forget an appropriate method of carrying them on your body.  Some, but not all, targets will be steel--no Armor Piercing (AP) or steel core ammo is allowed on the steel target stages (shooters will know beforehand and will be able to manage their ammo).

This event will be appropriate for your SBR / SMG / Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC), if you desire.  This event may be appropriate for your .22lr AR upper, if you desire and it functions properly.  However, unless you have .22lr pouches for your sidearm, a .22lr sidearm is not recommended.  Regardless, bring a "standard" sidearm.  If you wish to bring your defensive shotgun for manipulation practice, function check, etc, there will be a limited amount of time for which this would be appropriate (bring 5, maybe as many as 15 shells). However, the SGN should NOT be your primary long-gun for this event.  As always, you'll need appropriate slings and holsters.

YOU WILL NEED a suitable hand-held and/or Weapon-Mounted Light.  A reflective belt / vest, body-mounted cyalume stick (tied to your belt is ok), body-mounted personal light, or light-colored clothing is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for your safety.

Please understand that the length of the event is estimated, and may be subject to factors beyond our control.

The course of fire may be adjusted to accommodate the number of participants.

SAT 31 AUG:

"YOUR MISSION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT":  Expect multiple engagements primarily at distances out to 100 yds.  Possible bonus targets out to as far as 300 yds.  Bring a minimum of 100x rifle rounds and 25x pistol rounds.
