Military Appreciation Day 2014

Thanks for your interest in the Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club's Military Appreciation Day.

This page is just being built, so bear with us as we update it.  We're just going to put some basic info down now, so check back later as we improve this page.  Remember, this is all volunteer work done on private time.  (Most recent update:  24 May)

For GENERAL SHOOTING, skip towards the bottom.

PRACTICAL RIFLE AND PISTOL COMPETITION

The PRACTICAL RIFLE AND PISTOL event will be held 0900 C / 1000 E until approximately 1200 C / 1300 E.

DURING THIS TIME, THE COMPETITION WILL HAVE PRIORITY OVER GENERAL SHOOTING.

Shooters interested in only the general shooting are asked to arrive after 1200C/1300E.  However, shooters are welcome to participate in the competition, or as much of it as they are prepared for.

ADMISSION:  This event will be free of charge for Active Duty, Retired Military, and Dependent personnel with ID cards as proof of status.

This event is also open to the public with a $10 per person admission fee.

Come out and show us who's the best!  Challenge the office next door!  Team structure will be based on three-man (or woman!) teams, with some flexibility allowed.  For example, if everyone enters with a four-man team, we may alter the competition to be based on that standard.  Don't have exactly three shooters?  Don't worry--if you have:

- 1 Person:  You may shoot three times or join another team.

- 2 People:  You may choose one member to shoot twice or join another team.

- 3 People:  This is the intended basic team structure.

- 4 People:  We'll eliminate the lowest shooter's score...or the extra shooter may squad with another team.

- 5 People:  We'll eliminate both the highest and lowest shooter's score...or the extra two shooters may squad with another team.

- 6 People or more:  That's two teams.

So, let's see who's the best!  Possible teams might be...

        - AFNORTH vs AOC?

        - SFS vs CATM?

        - 325 FW vs RED HORSE?

        - Officers vs NCOs vs Enlisted?

        - Tyndall AFB vs NSA Panama City?

        - Canada vs FANG?

Shooters may each have individual rifles and sidearms or may share them between the team.  We want this event to be as inclusive as possible.

REGISTRATION:  E-mail us to register your team.  There's no fee to register, we just want to prepare for the right number of shooters.  Simply send us your team name (something appropriate in case it gets published, other than that come up with your best team name), and the number of participants, preferably with names (to facilitate the match).  It's ok if you have to switch team members out, but please come with the number of shooters you register with.

PRIZES:  UPDATE:  We have acquired some prizes--you can't win if you don't play!

Contact us if you would like to offer a prize, even if it's only for a specific group (e.g. CDR's coin for best team in HQ, Sr Enlisted Advisor award for best individual enlisted shooter, etc.  In such cases, we may be willing to name the award for the presenting organization or category).

COURSE OF FIRE:  Details to follow, but here are the basics.  There will be three events.  They will be:

- A rifle event with single targets at 100, 200, and 300 yards.  (Estimated 10 rds per shooter, NOT steel core or AP)  Shooters may fire from their choice of standing, kneeling, sitting (on the deck or at a table), or prone.  Shooters may use support.

- A rifle event with multiple targets at 50, 65, and 100 yards.  This event includes a mandatory reload (unless you're using a bolt action rifle).  (Est 15 rds ea)  Shooters may fire from standing or kneeling.

- A sidearm event with multiple steel plate targets at 10 - 24 yards.  This event may include a reload, depending on your choice of sidearms and your accuracy.  (Est 15 rds ea)  Shooters will fire from the standing position.

(Round counts are an initial estimate for your planning purposes, and are subject to change.)

SCORING:  This event will be scored based on a balance of speed and accuracy.  Your score will be represented by a time as adjusted with penalties for inaccuracy.  For example, if it takes you 12.5 seconds to clear a stage, but you have two hits outside the center zone (+3 sec ea) and two complete misses (+10 sec ea), your score might be 38.5.  (There is no specific penalty for missing, other than taking the time to engage the target again, i.e. no penalty for needing extra shots.  There is a penalty for not having hit the target at all.)

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:  Rifle (2 magazines if possible), sidearm (2 magazines/speedloaders if possible), ammo, eye protection, ear protection, hat with brim or bill, water, footwear suitable for loose and/or wet ground.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:  Sunscreen, insect repellant, shooting mat, sling, holster, magazine pouches, etc.

Some ammunition (5.56 mm, possibly others) may be available from private sources.  Inquire if you need some to be available or have specific needs.

GENERAL SHOOTING

After the Practical Rifle and Pistol event, the range will be open for general shooting.  Subject to activity levels, the range may be open for general shooting during the time of the Practical Rifle and Pistol event (with the event taking priority), subject to the discretion of the Match Director and Range Safety Officers.

Shooters interested in only the general shooting are asked to arrive after 1200C/1300E. However, shooters are welcome to participate in the competition, or as much of it as they are prepared for.

YOU WILL NEED:  Your own firearm(s), ammo, eye protection, ear protection.  You may want to bring targets, a staple gun, sunscreen, insect repellant, a hat with a brim or bill, water, footwear suitable for loose and/or wet ground.  Tannerite is allowed at distance of 100 yds or greater.  Steel core or AP ammo is not allowed to be shot at the steel plates ("dingers").  Targets will be available for a nominal fee.  Some ammunition (5.56 mm, possibly others) will be available from private sources.  Inquire if you have specic needs or want some to be available.

ATTN  ALL  PERSONNEL

You will need to check in with the Match Director and/or Range Safety Officer.

Do NOT bring out or handle any firearms until directed to do so as we may have personnel downrange scoring targets.

You will need to sign a liability waiver and agree to the range rules.  Click here for:  PRPSJ info/safety and GRPC range rules and GRPC safety rules.

Park in an orderly fashion so that others may come and go.

GRPC is Class III-friendly, but all NFA rules will apply.

UPDATE:  The Trap Range might be available as part of this event at a reduced cost.  Contact us if you want to use the trap range so we can gauge interest.

Although there isn't a specific age requirement for dependents to participate, pls be aware GRPC has no facilities for smaller children, e.g. no range-house that is generally open.  If your children are too young to be on an active firing line, it is likely best not to bring them.

We're still looking for a couple volunteers to assist.  Pls contact us if you're willing to help.

COMPLIMENTARY NRA MEMBERSHIPS:

The National Rifle Association is currently offering complimentary memberships to members of the military, law enforcement and first responders.

Please go to https://signup.nralifeofduty.tv/ for more information and to take advantage of this offer.

The Gulf Rifle and Pistol Club is an NRA-affiliated club. While you don't need to be a GRPC or NRA member to participate in the Practical Rifle (or Glock or Steel Challenge matches), NRA membership is required for GRPC membership. PRPSJ encourages you to join and support an organization fighting for your continued firearms rights. These organizations include, but are not limited to the NRA, the Second Amendment Foundation, and Gun Owners of America. Contact us for additional recommendations for the organization(s) that best suit your needs.
